The sky-blue sipjangsaeng. The same ten longevity symbols drawn in white against a soft blue ground, with the same hidden placket and curved hem as the gray. Reads younger, brighter, daytime.

The Sipjangsaeng Shirt (Sky)

Ten symbols. Spring sky.

Fabric

Lightweight cotton blend. Hidden button placket. Curved hem.

Occasion

Summer family dinners. A dol photograph where the parents want to coordinate without matching. Any outdoor meal in good weather.

The story

Sipjangsaeng is the set of ten longevity symbols. The grouping is old enough that no one household claims it. It belongs to the Korean year, carried at sixtieth birthdays, written across the back of a throne, embroidered into a bride's pillow. The wish is the same wish a parent carries for a child. Live long. Live well.

The sky reading lifts the set into daylight. White ink on a soft blue cotton blend reads as a clean dress shirt from across a yard and resolves into a forest of symbols up close. Hidden placket, curved hem, the same shirt body as the gray sister, tuned for warmer months and brighter rooms.

Worn at a backyard dol in May. The grandfather in the gray, the father in the sky, the toddler in red. The photograph does its work without anyone calling out the matching. The pine lands in the same place on both adult shirts. The crane finds different sleeves.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
