The Sipjangsaeng Shirt (Black)

Black shirt, hanbok bones.

Fabric

Lightweight cotton blend. Hidden button placket. Curved hem.

Occasion

Evening events. A Korean restaurant where the host is paying attention. The dinner that asks a black shirt to mean something specific.

The story

Sipjangsaeng is the set of ten longevity symbols. The grouping shows up across Korean life: behind a throne, on a folding screen, embroidered into a bridal pillow, painted onto the back wall at a hwangap. The wish carried by the set is plain. The room understands it without footnote.

Black brings the set into evening. White ink reads bright on jet under lamp light, the crane and the pine resolving across the chest like ink drawings on lacquer. The cotton blend stays light enough for a long dinner. The placket hides. The hem curves short at the side for trouser lines.

Worn to a private room at a Korean restaurant in the city. The host leans across the table to read the cuff and asks where the shirt was made. The conversation moves from the print to the meal to the family. The check arrives. The shirt has done the work a black shirt is supposed to do, and then some.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
