The Basic Long Jeogori (Sky Stripe)

Jeogori, weekday register.

Fabric

Mid-weight cotton-linen blend. Goreum at the front, hand-finished placket. Side slits at the hip.

Occasion

A casual family lunch. The early summer Saturday when the air is warm and the morning is unhurried. Over jeans or under a quiet coat.

The story

The jeogori is the upper piece of the hanbok wardrobe, the short jacket that meets the chima at the chest. For centuries the body length sat above the waist. The longer cut is a contemporary read, an extension that turns the jeogori into something a person can wear without the rest of the set, while keeping the goreum, the shoulder line, the V at the neck.

This is the daily reading. Sky-blue carries a fine cream stripe drawn vertically through the cotton-linen weave. The fabric breathes. The placket is finished by hand at the Seoul workshop. Side slits at the hip let the body move when the wearer reaches across the table.

Worn over jeans on a Saturday in May. A mother runs a coffee errand and comes back to find her daughter trying it on. By Sunday the piece has moved across the closet. The jeogori was always meant to live this way, in the room, not on a hanger.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
