A summer brunch. An outdoor family gathering in August. The Sunday afternoon table when the weather lets a hanbok breathe.
Dahan translates as warm season, the part of the Korean year when the fields turn green and the sleeves shorten. The cheollik has always been a cold-weather piece in its court origin. The summer reading is a modern argument that the bones of the form work in any temperature, if the fabric and the sleeve are tuned right.
This piece prints hand-rendered florals on a cream ground in sage and amber. The cotton blend has a soft hand that holds a pleat in heat. Short sleeves keep the wrist free. The Seoul workshop closes the goreum overlay with a mother-of-pearl button so the front does not need to be tied in the warmth of the day.
Worn at an August brunch in a Bay Area backyard. The florals on the chima land in the same palette as the garden behind the table. The cheollik moves between the kitchen and the patio without complaint. By the end of the meal the children have asked twice about the print, and the answer takes the rest of the afternoon.
