The Hanarin Cheollik

The piece you keep for the photos.

Fabric

Heavyweight matte poly with a brushed hand. Fully lined. Subtle tonal piping at the goreum.

Occasion

A sixtieth birthday. A senior portrait in the Bay Area garden circuit. A christening where the family wants the camera on the child and the line on the parent.

The story

Hanarin lives at the formal end of the cheollik family. The court cheollik was built for ceremony, and the modern formal cut is its closest honest cousin. The pleat sits sharper from the yoke. The sleeve carries an extra half-inch of volume for the photograph that captures motion. The piece is for the days that get remembered.

A heavyweight matte poly with a brushed hand holds the formal weight without slipping into shine. The Seoul workshop runs tonal piping along the goreum, so the closure reads as a finished line and not as a decoration. Lined throughout. The shoulder takes a press without remembering it.

Worn at a sixtieth birthday in March. The daughter stands behind her mother for the photograph. The cheollik catches the studio light at the pleat. The print arrives at the house a month later. It hangs in the hallway until the next sixtieth birthday.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
