A travel day on a long flight. A spring outdoor event in May. The afternoon wedding where the dress code is open and the chima has to arrive unwrinkled. The hours that ask for hanbok packed in a carry-on.
Sinarae is a Korean word for new wings, the kind a young bird earns. The chima has had its own set of wings in the modern era: the permanent pleat, the technical answer to a fabric that used to require a press before every wearing. The pleat that stays through travel is a recent Korean achievement.
This piece sets a permanent pleat through a sheer poly-blend top layer and lays it over an opaque slip in a contrasting tonal base. The pleat holds through washing. The Seoul workshop tests the set so the bottom does not slacken after the first wear. A side zip closes the piece clean.
Worn on a flight to Seoul. The chima packs into a carry-on and arrives ready to wear at a cousin's outdoor wedding the next afternoon. The pleat catches the spring light at the hem. A second cousin asks where the piece came from. The answer travels back across the Pacific with the wearer.
