The Hwawol Rose Garden Dress

Rose garden, on a body.

Fabric

Printed cotton-blend bodice over a smooth slip. Contrast panels sewn in. Hidden side zip.

Occasion

A summer outdoor wedding as a guest in late June. An engagement dinner where the table sits beside a flowering hedge. A Mother's Day brunch in May. The Sunday photograph that wants a garden frame.

The story

Hwawol translates as flower moon, the part of the Korean spring when the gardens fill in. The dress as a single garment, with the bodice joined to the chima section, is a modern silhouette built on a traditional reading. The print carries the season. The cut carries the occasion.

This piece prints a rose-garden motif on a cotton blend and sets contrast panels at the shoulder. The Seoul workshop sews the panels in instead of overlaying them, so the shoulder line stays clean. The chima section pleats soft from the natural waist. A smooth slip lives beneath the bodice. The hem lands below the knee.

Worn at a summer outdoor wedding as a guest. The rose print catches the garden behind the chairs. The contrast at the shoulder reads as a thoughtful frame in the ceremony photograph. The mother of the bride asks where the dress is from at the cocktail hour. The answer is the same answer the print has been giving all afternoon.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
