Beotnamu, cherry tree. A gold-tone hairpin shaped as a cherry branch with small enamel blossoms set along the curve. Hooks into the back of the hair with a spring-clip and holds without slipping. A fix that is also an ornament.

The Cherry Tree Hairpin

Cherry tree, holding hair.

Fabric

Gold-tone metal with enamel blossom detail. Spring-clip back.

Occasion

A wedding day where the hair has to stay through three rooms. An anniversary dinner. The piece that finishes the back of the head when the camera turns around.

The story

Cherry trees flower for a week in early April across Korea and every photograph of those weeks goes into a family album. The blossom is a public symbol of the moment that does not last. Korean hair ornament tradition is older than the blossom motif but the two have met often. A piece shaped as a branch carries the season into the room.

Gold-tone metal with enamel blossoms set along the curve of the branch. The spring-clip at the back grips a section of hair without pulling and holds through the day. The branch shape is detailed enough to read at the back of the head and small enough to slide into an updo without disturbing the shape underneath.

Worn at a wedding where the hair has to last from the first look through the dinner. The bride turns to take a photograph with a cousin and the back of the head registers as carefully as the front. An anniversary night where the dress is quiet and the ornament at the back of the head is the answer.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
