Suseonhwa, daffodil. A flower brooch in the daffodil shape, with a crystal at the trumpet center and painted metal petals. Pin-back closure, sized for the jeogori collar, a scarf, or the lapel of a spring coat.

The Daffodil Brooch

Daffodil, in metal.

Fabric

Painted metal with crystal detail. Steel pin-back.

Occasion

The Mother's Day brunch where the daughters arrive in cream and blue. A spring portrait under bright daylight. The pin that pairs without fighting the rest of the outfit for the eye.

The story

Daffodils open in February and March across the Korean peninsula, early enough that they read as the first sign of spring before the cherry blossom takes the headlines. Korean ornament has kept the daffodil in its register for decades, often as a small bright note on a jeogori collar. The flower carries the season at a quiet volume.

Painted metal with a crystal at the trumpet center. The petals are shaped clean, the back is hand-finished, the steel pin fastens without bending. The whole piece is sized to land at a collar without crowding the goreum. Daffodil yellow is the color of the trumpet, the petals carry an ivory tone that lets the brooch pair with cream and pale blue.

Worn to the Mother's Day brunch where three generations sit at the same table. The daughter pins the brooch on the grandmother's coat before they leave the house. A spring portrait outdoors when the photographer asks for one deliberate color note. The daffodil lands first, lets the face register second.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
