The Leaf Norigae

A leaf. A flower. A cord.

Fabric

Mother-of-pearl petals, fine wire, glass beads. Silk cord and tassel.

Occasion

A special-occasion hanbok where the dress has already decided the room. A spring portrait under directional light. The norigae for the dress that needs nothing else around it at the chest.

The story

Norigae is the ornament tied at the goreum. The form has lived inside the Korean wardrobe through dynasties and republics, carrying symbols, scent, sometimes a charm against bad luck. Botanical norigae stayed close to the household register, where a leaf and a flower could read both for the season and for the family that kept a garden.

Mother-of-pearl petals laid flat at the central element, with fine wire stringing glass beads through the stem behind. Silk cord throughout, finished with a hand-tied tassel below. The juche is sized full enough to carry the chest of a jeogori on its own. The wirework reads at speaking distance and the mother-of-pearl reads across the room.

Worn to the special-occasion hanbok where the dress is decided and the norigae is the answer for everything else. A spring portrait where the photographer asks for one ornament and the wearer brings the piece that carries the season at the chest. The norigae for the dress that needs nothing else around it.
