Goun, refined. A knot-only norigae, no jewel, no pearl, just silk cord tied into the traditional five-color knot pattern. The most traditional of our norigae forms, sized for ceremonial hanbok.

The Goun Knot Norigae

Just the cord. Just the knot.

Fabric

Silk cord throughout. Hand-tied in a five-color traditional knot pattern. Tassel hand-finished.

Occasion

A ceremonial hanbok where the household knows the form. The norigae for hwangap and traditional weddings, the chest ornament that names its lineage in cord and knot alone. The piece that does not need a stone.

The story

Norigae is the ornament tied at the goreum, the ribbon that closes the jeogori. Before the form carried stones or pearls it carried knots. The traditional five-color knot pattern was the original ornament, taught from master to apprentice across generations. The cord and the knot were the work. Everything else came after.

Silk cord throughout, tied by hand in the five-color traditional knot pattern in our Seoul workshop. The work takes an afternoon for a craftsman who has been at it for years. The tassel is hand-finished and falls clean. There is no metal, no stone, no pearl. The piece is the cord and the knot and nothing else.

Worn for the ceremonial hanbok where the household knows what to look for. A hwangap where the elders read the knot pattern at the chest and recognize the work. A traditional wedding where the bride carries the form in its original register. The norigae that does not need any other element to make its case.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
