Cherry blossom. At the chest.
Lightweight cotton blend with embroidered detail. Mother-of-pearl button placket.
A cherry-blossom-season portrait taken in the courtyard. A Mother's Day brunch in early May. An outdoor spring wedding as a guest where the dress code reads pastel and the host has asked for warm tones at the table.
Cherry blossoms, beotkkot, hold a complicated place in Korean visual culture. The blossoms are associated with the Japanese occupation in the older readings and with spring renewal in the younger. The contemporary embroidered cherry blossom reads as spring, a careful choice the atelier has made with eyes open.
The embroidery is hand-rendered in tonal pink thread, the petals catching light at slightly different angles than the base cloth. The work is held to the chest panel so the rest of the blouse stays clean. The lightweight cotton blend takes the embroidery without puckering. The mother-of-pearl placket closes cleanly.
Worn to the Mother's Day brunch held at the cafe with the cherry tree in the courtyard. The wearer sits at the window. The light through the blossoms outside catches the embroidery on her chest. The mother across the table reads it as the right register of quiet, and that is what the morning needed.
