The Yeoun Split Chima

Lingering, in cloth.

Fabric

Mid-weight cotton blend with overlay panel. Hidden side zip.

Occasion

Evening dinners with a long table. The skirt that catches the eye twice, first walking in, again walking away. The piece for the room the wearer wants to be remembered in.

The story

Yeoun, lingering, is the Korean word for the feeling that stays in the room after the music stops, after the conversation ends, after the photograph is taken. The word names something Korean aesthetics has always cared about, the quiet aftermath. A chima built around yeoun has to hold motion and stillness in the same piece.

The split front opens the skirt at the side and the asymmetric overlay reveals the contrast as the wearer walks. The cotton blend was chosen for its drop, the overlay moving without flapping. The hidden side zip holds the waistband clean. The hem is finished by hand. The piece reads still from the front and animated from the side.

Worn to the dinner held at the restaurant where the host is paying attention. The wearer walks in and the overlay catches the room as she crosses to the table. The conversation moves on. Hours later, after the wearer has gone, the host remembers the walk away from the table, the cloth catching the light at the door. That is yeoun.
