Two freshwater pearl butterflies hung from a hand-knotted silk cord, finished with a tassel drop. The pair sits one above the other along a single line. Tied at the goreum of a jeogori for the day that asks for one careful ornament.

The Pearl Butterfly Norigae

Two butterflies. One thread.

Fabric

Freshwater pearl wings, silk-thread knot, hand-tied tassel. Pin-clasp at the top for secure attachment.

Occasion

The wedding-day hanbok, after the dress is decided and the ornament is the last decision. A Chuseok table where the elders look at the chest first. The bridal portrait that wants one piece, not three.

The story

Norigae is the ornament tied at the goreum, the ribbon that closes the jeogori. In the Joseon court it carried symbols, sometimes scent, sometimes a small charm against bad luck. The butterfly is one of the older motifs in the household register, read for joy, for a marriage that lasts, for the pair that does not separate. Two butterflies double the read.

Freshwater pearl at each wing. The cord is silk, the knot in the middle is tied in the traditional pattern by hand. The tassel is hand-finished and falls cleanly. A pin-clasp at the top fastens to the goreum without bruising the cloth. The second butterfly hangs a small distance below the first, so the eye reads the pair and lingers.

Worn on the day a bride bows at the paebaek. The elders sit on cushions, the chest registers before the face. The pair carries the wish into the room. After the ceremony the same ornament moves to a quieter dinner. A pair of pearls catching low light. The detail a daughter eventually inherits.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
