The story
The candy-stripe hanbok is a contemporary form. Traditional girls' hanbok used saturated solids and printed motifs, but the wide stripe is a modern children's atelier choice, an answer to the question of what a young daughter wants to wear when she is allowed to choose. The Dalkom holds the answer in cloth.
The stripes run vertical through the chima, in alternating pastels with a warm pink as the lead note. The bodice carries the same print at a softer scale. The goreum bow is oversized for the visual register a young child responds to. The cotton blend is light, the closures are gentle, the bow ties without struggle.
Worn by the daughter at her own birthday party, where the mother has agreed that the daughter gets to choose her outfit. The daughter chose this one weeks ago. The grandmother who arrives early ties the goreum bow oversized, the way the daughter wants it. The daughter spins once in the front room to check the chima. The party can begin.
