Reference TKIM-D-118 · 3 to 4 week production

$245 to $355 · quoted in consultation

A cheollik printed with ink-wash brushstrokes across the chima, the bodice held plain. The name carries the Korean ink-wash painting tradition. The print reads as art, not as motif. Mid-weight cotton blend, lined bodice.

The Sumukhwa Cheollik

Ink-wash. In a hanbok.

Fabric

Mid-weight cotton blend with ink-wash print on the chima panel. Lined through the bodice. Hidden side zip.

Occasion

A museum opening with a Korean curator at the helm. The dinner where the host has curated the art on the walls. The cheollik for the room that reads the print as a reference rather than a decoration.

The story

Sumukhwa is the Korean ink-wash painting tradition, the practice of black ink on white paper, brush in hand, gesture more than depiction. The form descends from the literati painters of Joseon and continues in contemporary practice. A cheollik that carries sumukhwa has to honor the gesture, not flatten it.

The print runs across the chima panel and is held back from the bodice entirely. The brushstrokes are scanned from work commissioned for the line, reproduced on cotton blend that takes the ink-tone clean. The bodice is lined for structure, the side zip stays hidden, the hem is finished by hand. The cheollik reads as a moving painting from across a gallery floor.

Worn to the museum opening of a Korean ink-painting retrospective. The cheollik enters the room and the print reads as part of the exhibition. The curator notices first. The wearer answers the question about the print without ceremony. The dress does what the gallery does: it puts the work in the room.

Hand-finished in Seoul. Inspected and fitted in San Mateo.
