The story
Saessak, sprout, is the Korean word for the first green that pushes through the soil after winter. The word carries a specific register: small, hopeful, the green that does not yet know what it will become. A hanbok for a daughter built around saessak has to honor that small register without making the child look like a costume.
The Saessak holds green and ivory across the jeogori and chima, the green soft rather than saturated. The open-front jeogori reads slightly more contemporary than the closed cuts, with a goreum tie that keeps the front clean. The chima drops soft for a quiet line. The cotton blend is light against the skin and finished without ornament that distracts from the color.
Worn by the daughter at the spring dinner the grandparents host every year. The mother dresses the daughter in the morning and the daughter holds still through the goreum tie. The grandfather, who notices color the way he used to notice weather, sees the green when the daughter enters the dining room and calls her over to the head of the table. The dinner can begin.
